Enhanced Mental Health Distress Screening Addresses Gap in Health Equity

Innovations and advancements in modern-day medicine continue to lessen disease burden and contribute to growth in life expectancy. However, despite these advancements, access to and benefits from these opportunities are not always equitable across populations. In the U.S. healthcare system, underserved populations are often left with fewer resources, less attentive care, and limited access to care.

Cancer Transitions Program Helps Cancer Survivors Cope After Treatment Ends

A cancer diagnosis brings many psychosocial implications from diagnosis to remission, but life after active disease is not free of emotional distress. Many cancer survivors are relieved of the immediate distress that develops during a cancer journey, yet 25% of survivors experience persistent psychosocial distress including anxiety and depression.

Kristin M. Laferty, MSW, LICSW

Submitted by jcoe on Fri, 11/03/2023 - 15:26

Kristin currently serves in both the Program Dir. and Exec. Director roles for Cancer Support Community Massachusetts—an identified area for Strategic Growth for CSC as an organization. As a PD she oversees the clinical staff and programming for the Mass network partner and in her ED role she is additionally responsible for fundraising, outreach, networking and growth of the organization.

Kristin is a Maryland native who earned her MSW degree from The University of Maryland School of Social Work. While still in graduate school Kristin was inspired to develop her clinical skills to serve patients in the medical setting.  When she was awarded a post graduate fellowship in Palliative Care at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital, she felt right at home working directly with cancer patients and their caregivers.  Over the past 20 + years, Kristin has discovered that working with oncology, hospice, palliative care and medically fragile patients is the most rewarding of all her clinical work.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Kristin volunteers her time as a board member for Young Life, a non-profit benefiting middle and high school students’ well-being.  Kristin also enjoys traveling and DIY.  She is most happy dreaming up projects, bringing them to life and then posting the results on Instagram.

We will also examine the benefits and risks of social media use by patients, in sharing their stories and experiences in

Understanding Patients' Emotions (and Our Own), Especially When Breaking Bad News | POPS 2023

Breaking bad news is a necessary task for care providers, but the emotions of providers and patients can make this task painfully difficult. This session shares practical takeaways providers can use when faced with having to share some bad news with a patient. We'll discuss a new perspective on how emotions actually work (hint: preformed emotion circuits are not hardwired into your brain), bust some common myths about emotions, and explore what this perspective means for how we can approach bad news conversations. In all cases, our takeaways will be informed by the latest social scientific
