Iotta swim team getting out of the water

On Sunday, September 11, the Cancer Support Community is partnering with the Events DC Nation’s Triathlon for our 2nd annual Team CSC event. We wanted to introduce you to some of newest members of Team CSC with some short Q&As. We are so proud of our first-time participants on this year's CSC Team.

Tom Wallace

What event(s) are you doing in the triathlon?: I'm swimming as part of a relay team that includes a friend who is biking and his son who will be running.

Have you ever participated in an endurance event before? If so, what?:  I have participated in a few sprint triathlons each of the last few years.  The Nation's triathlon is double that distance.

Are you participating in honor of someone? If so, who?: My volunteering at CSC overall is both in honor of family members and out of a desire to make a difference.

What motivated you to participate in the Nation’s Tri with the Cancer Support Community Team?:  For the Nation's Tri, my participation is mostly to have fun, test my swimming limits, and ensure at least one male is on the CSC team!

Where can people go to support you in the Tri:   Support me at the start or finish line, but you may want to keep an eye on the rescue boat!

Anything else you’d like to add?:  Added benefits of racing on the CSC team are a free tri top, and the services of a great tri coach with daily training guides and racing tips.

Sarah Suettinger

What event(s) are you doing in the triathlon?: Olympic relay, swimming leg.

Have you ever participated in an endurance event before? If so, what?: Yes, 4 half-marathons.

Are you participating in honor of someone? If so, who?: Yes, in memory of: Jon Coenen, Sr (Grandpa), Sue-Jean Suettinger (mother-in-law) and Tracey Schwarze (my dad’s fiancée).

What motivated you to participate in the Nation’s Tri with the Cancer Support Community Team?: It’s a personal challenge to get back in the pool to train for an endurance event. (I was a competitive swimmer growing up.) Also, [I wanted] to support and bring awareness to CSC.

Linda House

What event(s) are you doing in the triathlon?: I am participating on a relay team – I am doing the run.

Have you ever participated in an endurance event before? If so, what?: Watching the efforts of the CSC tri-team last year inspired me to run a half-marathon on December 13, 2015 – my first ever.

Are you participating in honor of someone? If so, who?: I am dedicating my tri to my dad, Fred Bohannon – whose brave journey with acute myeloid leukemia inspired so many.

Rob Goldsmith

What event(s) are you doing in the triathlon?: 800 meter Relay Swim

Have you ever participated in an endurance event before? If so, what?: This is my first time doing an open water competitive swim!

Are you participating in honor of someone? If so, who?: In honor of my grandmother: Louise Goldsmith

What motivated you to participate in the Nation’s Tri with the Cancer Support Community Team?: This seemed like an exciting opportunity to do a fun event with my fellow co-workers!

Jami Fancher

What event(s) are you doing in the triathlon?: Olympic Relay running event

Have you ever participated in an endurance event before? If so, what?: No, furthest thing.  I was a dancer growing up which only ever required 2 min routines. I’m also a competitive water-skier. You only get about 20 seconds to a minute on the water for those events. So any type of endurance event is a whole new territory for me to conquer.

What motivated you to participate in the Nation’s Tri with the Cancer Support Community Team?: The overall wellness you need to compete in endurance events like these really represents the wellness CSC offers to those impacted by cancer. I have found in my training that this race seems to be 25% about physical strength and 75% mental strength. I needed to find a way to empower myself and really work hard at my training. Team CSC has supported me in this training journey much like CSC supports those impacted by cancer.
