Alex Markel

Alex joined Cancer Support Community in February 2024. In his role as Vice President, Industry Partnerships & Alliances, Alex leads external engagement strategy to drive collaboration and corporate partnerships within the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. Alex brings nearly 15 years of corporate relations and development experience to CSC, with the last seven years within the cancer space at ALSAC/St. Jude and Family Reach Foundation. He has extensive experience aligning industry priorities to successfully establish and sustain partnerships to support pan-cancer, disease-specific, and equity-focused programs. 

Alex resides in Chapel Hill, NC with his wife Jackie, son Emmett, and dog Howie.

Katherine Labus received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, worked as a Registered Behavior Technician, and is currently pursuing nursing school at Carolinas College of Health Sciences in Charlotte, NC. She is inspired by her direct work with clients and hopes to bring psychology, social factors, and clinical healthcare together to foster comprehensive healing as she continues her career and education.

Scott Barr is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) at SMX having joined the company in 2025. In Scott’s role he leads operations and strategic initiatives across departments to ensure the company’s strategic goals are met efficiently and effectively. Scott is a seasoned leader in the field of Technology Services.

With over 25 years of experience, he excels in guiding organizations to leverage technology to modernize and transform their business operations. Prior to joining SMX, Scott led the Technology Services business at Maximus leading capabilities around Cloud, AI, Digital and Cyber and responsible for P&L management and growth of the business. In this role he led integration of a $400+ million acquisition, resulting in the seamless consolidation of operations. As part of this role, he stood up the Technology Services Business across Maximus—a new business model for the enterprise.

Before joining Maximus, Scott held the position of President at Sierra7, a healthcare technology firm. In this role, he spearheaded post-merger strategy, overseeing the expansion of the company’s technical portfolio and driving overall growth. Scott demonstrated proficiency in P&L management, strategy formulation, and operational oversight. As a Partner with over a 20-year tenure with Booz Allen Hamilton, Scott occupied various leadership roles, showcasing his expertise in IT modernization, organization design, and business development. His roles included Functional Service Officer, growing and leading a geography, and leading major accounts for the company. Additionally, as the firm’s Chief Transformation Officer, he led the long-term strategy, fostered a data-driven culture, and spearheaded internal transformation efforts.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Scott was an Adjunct Professor of Organizational Change Management at Georgetown University, contributing his knowledge to the next generation of leaders. Committed to community service, he serves on the Board of the USO Metro, providing vital support to military personnel and their families. Additionally, Scott is on the Executive Committee and serves as the Board Vice Chair for the Cancer Support Community—a nationwide nonprofit providing research, advocacy, and support for cancer patients and their loved ones. In addition to several professional certifications, Scott has an undergraduate degree from Susquehanna University and a Masters Degree from Johns Hopkins University. Scott, his spouse of over twenty years, and his two children live in Northern Virginia. He enjoys traveling, hiking, and spending time at his kids’ sporting events.
