I Lost My Health Insurance. What Now?
ASK RUBY: I Lost My Health Insurance. What Now?
Response:
Losing your health insurance can be scary, especially when facing cancer. The Cancer Support Community is here to support you as you navigate coverage options.
You may qualify for a special enrollment period by a marketplace health plan. Visit healthcare.gov to pick and purchase a new plan.
Depending on your income, you may be eligible for financial assistance in the form of tax credits and cost-sharing. Another option is COBRA, which allows you to pay for the same insurance you had while you were employed. If you do pick COBRA, bear in mind that you can not switch to a marketplace plan until the next marketplace open enrollment period.
Keep in mind that you only have 60 days from loss of coverage to purchase a marketplace plan or obtain coverage under COBRA. There are other options to consider, like a government program such as Medicaid. Or if you're under the age of 26, you may be able to join a parent's health insurance plan.
