Making Sense of Clinical Trials — Together

Clinical trials can be confusing. It can be hard to understand how they work, what you might expect, and how you fit into this process. If you’re already overwhelmed, it can make learning about your options, including clinical trials, all the more difficult.

That’s why we offer a free peer support program to help you better understand cancer clinical trials and help you make informed decisions about your care.

In this program, we’ll connect you with a peer mentor — a Black cancer patient or survivor who’s participated in a clinical trial. You can ask questions, talk about your concerns, and hear from someone like you who’s gone through a similar experience.

In this program, you’ll get:

  • 2 free and private phone calls with your peer mentor
  • Conversations that work best for you
  • A safe space to ask your questions and share your concerns
  • A chance to hear about your peer mentor’s experience with clinical trials
  • Resources and support that fit your needs

How It Works

  1. Enroll: Fill out a short form or give us a call. We’ll talk with you to ensure the program is right for you and match you with a peer mentor who best suits your needs.
  2. Connect: Connect with your peer mentor on the phone, email, or by text — what is most comfortable for you.
  3. Engage: Ask questions, share your concerns, and learn more about clinical trials from your peer mentor.

We’ll match you with a Black peer mentor to receive one-on-one free emotional and practical support.

To participate, you must:

  • Identify as Black or African American
  • Have a cancer diagnosis or are at higher risk of a cancer diagnosis due to family history
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Speak English

Why This Program Matters

Many people who identify as Black face barriers to joining clinical trials, including financial or insurance concerns, limited access to information, or past experiences that make it hard to trust the healthcare system.

This program helps to address some of those barriers by connecting you with someone who can understand you and your concerns because they’ve had similar life experiences.

When more people from diverse communities, including Black people, join clinical trials, researchers can develop treatments that work better for everyone.

Our Peer Mentors

Our peer mentors are Black cancer patients or survivors.  Each mentor has participated in a cancer clinical trial.

They are here to listen to your questions and concerns, share their experience, and provide you with the education and resources you need to better understand clinical trials.

Peer mentors do not provide medical advice or enroll you in a clinical trial.
