Anyone who runs a marathon has a powerful motivation for taking on the 26.2-mile feat it entails. For CSC United — our team of runners who will race in the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 2 — it’s about much more than the miles.
We chatted with our 5 runners about their inspiration for running with CSC United. Discover the motivation behind every step they’ll take in the race — and how you can join us to make an even greater impact in the lives of those who need it most.
Anna Nelson
I would love nothing more than to run my very first marathon for my mom.
What inspired you to run the NYC Marathon?
Earlier this year, I lost my mom, Shelley Mayer Nelson, to her 7-year battle with breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer. As I continue to cope with my mom’s absence, I’ve found moments of peace while running every day in the city. I would love nothing more than to run my very first marathon for my mom.
Why did you want to run with Cancer Support Community's team?
I think being a part of CSC United is an incredible way to honor my mom’s life. This is a way for me to help others by raising money and awareness for those suffering from cancer to ensure they have access to care and community support. The community focus of CSC is something I have found to resonate deeply with me as I have relied on the strength and support of others to get through my mom’s illness, and now, her passing.

What inspired you to run the NYC Marathon?
My marathon is dedicated to my dear friend Armando De Zayas, whose spear against glioblastoma multiforme is science, but whose armor is an unshakable faith in The Almighty. My brother Armando is an indelible part of my own faith journey and a steadfast reminder of medicine’s providence from The Divine, not only for healing the body, but also the soul. A new year — plus, hopefully it’ll help me get lots of family and friends out to support!
Why did you want to run with Cancer Support Community's team?
I am running with the CSC team as I carry with me the spirit of every woman with gynecologic cancer who has ever given me the profound gift and privilege of being her oncologist. I am forever grateful for the lessons they continue to teach me about true courage and resilience. This cause is deeply important to me.
Nicky Gifford
I’m driven to honor the close friends and family members who have been impacted by cancer.
What inspired you to run the NYC Marathon?
Running the New York City Marathon has been on my bucket list for a long time, a goal that took on even greater significance after I became a NYC resident last year. Through running the marathon, I’m driven to honor the close friends and family members who have been impacted by cancer. Running with CSC makes this dream deeply meaningful as I support this important cause.
Why did you want to run with Cancer Support Community's team?
A statistic from The Economist recently highlighted the pervasive reach of cancer: Every adult has either faced the disease, knows someone who has, or both. This reality reflects how profoundly cancer touches every life with its challenges and affects our communities. CSC is a nonprofit organization which addresses this widespread impact by offering vital emotional support, practical resources, and a sense of community to those navigating the challenges of cancer.
Patrick and Kacey Connolly
CSC has been a central part of our lives for as long as we can remember.
What inspired you to run the NYC Marathon?
Both of us chase just about every outdoor adventure we can find: skiing, hiking, biking, and of course, running.
Why did you want to run with Cancer Support Community's team?
CSC has been a central part of our lives for as long as we can remember. Growing up, we watched our mom dedicate herself to her work with this incredible organization, always supporting and advocating for those affected by cancer. Through the experiences of family members, including our late Uncle Moon Mullin and grandfather Edward Connolly (Pa), we have seen firsthand the powerful impact it can have, not just on individuals but on entire families and communities navigating the challenges of cancer.
CSC is built on a commitment to support the needs of cancer patients and their families, particularly those who don’t have easy access to care, resources, or a strong support system. That’s a mission we both deeply believe in.
Help Expand CSC’s Reach
Let’s keep running toward hope, healing, and a future where no one faces cancer alone.
