Every fall around the first weekend of October, Lewiston, Maine hosts the Dempsey Challenge.
For two days, participants run, walk or bike to raise funds for the Dempsey Center— a organization that offers free support to anyone impacted by cancer.
If the name “Dempsey” conjures images of a medical professional in a ferryboat scrub cap, it’s because the Dempsey Center and Challenge began thanks to Patrick Dempsey, the actor best known as Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd from “Grey’s Anatomy.”
When Dempsey lost his mother to cancer, he knew he wanted to do something to help others who are dealing with cancer. He turned to his family and his community in Lewiston, and together, they started the Dempsey Center. The Dempsey Challenge supports the center and just celebrated its ninth anniversary.
I’ve been lucky to have had the opportunity participate in the Dempsey Challenge the past two years. Dempsey works closely with Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer, an initiative in which CSC partners with three other nonprofit organizations, National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, Patient Advocate Foundation, and Prevent Cancer Foundation, to help spread information to patients and their loved ones about their entire cancer journey. Every year, the Dempsey Challenge invites the four nonprofits to participate at the Dempsey Challenge and talk to those who come to the event about the services each organization provides.
It’s been an incredible experience to be able to talk to patients, caregivers, and loved ones about finding support and resources that can make a difference in their lives. It’s truly rewarding to hear how using the Cancer Support Helpline or joining the Cancer Experience Registry has helped someone get through their cancer experience. It serves as a renewed reminder of the importance of offering support to all those impacted by cancer.
At CSC, we could not be more grateful for someone like Patrick Dempsey who is using his fame to help others. He continues to amaze us by offering the opportunity to win a lunch date with him with where all proceeds benefit the Breakaway from Cancer initiative.
I have had the opportunity to meet Mr. Dempsey and based on his warm and genuine personality, this lunch will be one of a lifetime! If you think you’d like to have a date with Dr. McDreamy, then you can enter for a chance to win until the end of October.
