Breakaway From Cancer

For the 5th consecutive year, the Cancer Support Community (CSC) is pleased to partner with Breakaway from Cancer, a national initiative founded by Amgen to raise awareness of the important resources available to people affected by cancer – from prevention through survivorship. This initiative has grown to include several awareness events throughout the year.

Patrick Devinger, survivor, fires the starting gun

Earlier this spring CSC participated in the signature event of Breakaway from Cancer, the Amgen Tour of California. CSC and several of its California affiliates were present at each stage of this 8-day, 750 mile race to share valuable information about the free emotional and social support services available through our vibrant network of community-based centers and online. Breakaway from Cancer garnered 78 million media impressions, in addition to the thousands of people who passed through the Breakaway from Cancer tent at each stage of the race and those who participated in 4 “Breakaway Miles”, honoring cancer survivors and caregivers, throughout the race.

Breakaway from Cancer Roundtable

Following the Amgen Tour of California, Breakaway from Cancer partners participated in “Striking the Balance,” a first-of-its-kind roundtable event at the 2010 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting. The event was designed to highlight potential areas for improvement throughout the spectrum of cancer c are, and inspire action by establishing several calls-to-action for the cancer community and health policy makers. The event has inspired a podcast series that will be available at www.breakawayfromcancer.com later this summer.

On July 20th, the Breakaway from Cancer initiative hosted an education reception on Capitol Hill to share information to congressional members, staffers and advocates featuring the resources available throughout the continuum of cancer care. Representative Lois Capps (CA-23rd District), co-chair of the House Cancer Caucus spoke about the importance of constituents having access to the variety of resources that the Breakaway from Cancer partners provide. A former nurse and health advocate, Representative Capps is a true champion in Congress for cancer patients and the cancer community.

Breakaway from Cancer will also be featured throughout the summer at the LIVESTRONG Challenge cycling races across the country. The LIVESTRONG Challenge Series is the signature fundraising event for LIVESTRONG, and draws crowds of thousands of people hungry for information about the free resources that CSC provides to all people affected by cancer.

CSC is honored and proud to be a community partner in the Breakaway from Cancer movement and look forward to the growing outreach opportunities it provides throughout the year.
