The Cancer Support Community (CSC) traveled around the country this summer in support of our partnership with Breakaway from Cancer, a national initiative founded by Amgen to raise awareness of the important resources available to all people affected by cancer. This initiative has grown to include several awareness events throughout the year, most recently the LIVESTRONG Challenge Series cycling races. The Challenge Series, which includes four cycling events in as many cities, is the signature fundraising event for LIVESTRONG and has raised more than $60 million over the past 13 years. Perhaps more importantly, these events also provide a forum for discussion about challenges that individuals and families face amidst a cancer diagnosis and the many resources available to them.
CSC kicked off our travels in Seattle, WA in June, where 1,600 runners and riders braved the rainy weather to raise more than $800,000. Our second stop was sunny San Jose, CA in July. Here, 1,500 people participated to raise $1 million. And most recently, we visited Philadelphia, Pa where 5,700 people raised an incredible $3.1 million! All told, almost 9,000 athletes, countless volunteers, as well as their friends and family turned out in support of these 3 events.
The Challenge Series marks an important opportunity for CSC to share information about the vital resources we provide for people with cancer and their loved ones, while also speaking to services offered by our partners in the Breakaway from Cancer initiative: Prevent Cancer, Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF) and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS). Together, we represent the spectrum of cancer care from prevention through survivorship, as well as an abundance of services and resources available to all people affected by cancer.
CSC will once again represent the Breakaway from Cancer partnership at an additional Challenge race in Austin, TX on October 22-23. We continue to look forward to the growing outreach opportunities that this initiative provides throughout the year!
